COMPETENCY-BASED CURRICULUM STRUCTURE

Introduction

A competency-based curriculum (CBC) is used new curriculum used in Kenya to deliver learning and evaluate the strenghts and weaknesses of learners. It is under this system where each learner's progress is monitored over a period of 2-6-3-3 years divided into three major levels of education.

Grading System

Learners will be graded as follows:

  1. Exceeding expectation:This is the highest score awarded when a learner correctly performs and completes all the activities as expected.

  2. Meeting expectation:This is when the learner follows instructions correctly and performs tasks as well as completing all activities in each learning areas.

  3. Approaching expectation:Learner attempts to follow instructions but is inconsistent with completing tasks or activities in the different learning areas.

  4. Below expectation:where a learner is observed to have major inaccuracies or inability to complete tasks as instructed by the teacher. 

Pre-primary Education

Learners enters pre-primary school for two years where they passes through PP1 and PP2.

Lower Primary Education

At lower primary, learning is divided into grades 1,2 and 3 as it is a continuation of child's early years of education.

The expected learner's ages in this level of education is as follows:

Grade 3 normally does KNEC at the final years after being registered for it.

Registration Requirements

Upper Primary Educations

This includes grades 4,5 and 6 and the expected learners age is 9,10 and 11 years.

Learning Subjects in Upper primary

Junior Secondary Education

This level of education has been categorised it grades 7,8 and 9 years.

The expected learners ages is 11,12 and 13.

Learning subjects in Junior Secondary

Senior Secondary Education

This level of education has been divided into grades 10,11 and 12years..

The expected learners ages is 14,15 and 16 years.

Learning Subjects in Senior Secondary

Tertiary Education

This level of education is where students are given a chance to specialize in their areas of interest and at the same time taking core subjects irrespective of the career pathway.
